Roof arrays and the board they connect to

Solar PV in Preston

Solar PV for roofs that can actually take an array, connected properly into the electrics that are already there. We install systems on domestic roofs and on suitable light commercial buildings around Preston. Call 07869 600553 with a photo of the roof and of the consumer unit.

Solar that is tied into the electrics

A solar PV install is a roof job and an electrical job. The panels are the part everyone photographs. The part that decides whether the system is safe and usable is the cable route, the inverter, and the consumer unit it lands on. We do both, because the business already covers the electrics in the house.

The photo on this page is an array on a pitched roof, scaffold still up, in the sort of terraced street you see across Lancashire. It is an example of the work, not a promise that every roof in Preston should look the same. Orientation, shading from a neighbour's gable, and the condition of the covering all change the answer.

Electrical context for the rest of the house is on the electrician in Preston page.

What we look at before anyone orders panels

Which slopes face the right way, and for how much of the day. What shades them: chimneys, trees, the house behind. Whether the roof covering is sound enough to carry an array for the life of the system. Where the cable can come into the building without a ugly loop across the front elevation. Where the inverter can live. What the consumer unit is, and whether it has a usable way.

If the board needs replacing, that is quoted with the solar, not added as a surprise. Old boards and full boards are common in Preston terraces that otherwise have a perfectly good south-facing roof. The consumer unit page describes that work.

How the install runs

Scaffold or safe access first. Rails and panels on the agreed slopes. Cable into the property by the route we showed you. Inverter and protection fitted where they can be reached later. The board connected, labelled, and tested. We do not leave you with a loft full of unnamed isolators.

You get a walk-through of what is on, what the shutdown procedure is, and what to send a future electrician if they ask. If your insurer, a buyer or a grant scheme wants specific paperwork, ask us before the scaffold goes up so we know what the file has to contain.

Chargers and heat pumps in the same conversation

Solar, a home EV charger, and a heat pump all land on the same electrical supply. Designing them separately is how people run out of board, or pay for scaffold and a board change twice. If more than one of those is on the cards, tell us at the survey.

Heat pumps are heating plant as much as they are renewable plant. An outdoor unit we have installed is shown here. The heating conversation, including when a heat pump is the wrong swap for a boiler, is on the heating page. Bring the house, not a brochure, and we will talk about what the building can support.

What we will not tell you

We will not promise a grant that we cannot process, or a yearly saving invented to make the quote look clever. How much of your own electricity you use, and what you are paid for export, depends on the tariff and how the house is lived in. Those change. The quality of the install should not.

If the roof is a poor candidate, we will say so. Call 07869 600553 with the photos. If you only needed an electrician and solar was a later thought, start with the electrical pages and mention the roof when you are ready.

Roofs we will look at

Solar surveys around Preston, Warton, Freckleton, Kirkham, Lytham, Penwortham, Fulwood, Leyland, the Fylde and South Ribble. Not every roof is suitable. Shading, condition, orientation and the board inside the house all decide it. We will say if yours is a poor candidate.

FAQs

Solar PV questions

Do you install the panels and connect them?
Yes. The array on the roof and the electrical connection into the property are one job. A solar install that ignores the age and capacity of the consumer unit is how people end up with a system that cannot be signed off properly. We look at the board as part of the survey.
Is every Preston roof suitable?
No. Heavy shading, a roof that needs replacing first, a poor orientation, or a structure that will not carry the array, are all reasons to say no. Terraces can be excellent or hopeless depending on which way they face and what sits to the south of them. We would rather turn a job down than cover a bad roof in panels.
Will you need to change the consumer unit?
Sometimes. If the board is old, full, or not suitable for the inverter circuit, it gets quoted as part of the job, not discovered on the morning of the scaffold. Consumer unit work is explained on our consumer unit page.
Can solar and an EV charger be done together?
They can, and it is often the right way to do it, because the board and the cable routes get designed once. Tell us if a charger is part of the plan, even if you want the solar first. Charger installs have their own page.
Do you fit heat pumps as well?
Yes, where the house suits one. A heat pump is a different design conversation from a few panels on a roof: insulation, radiators or underfloor, the cylinder, and the electrical supply. We will not pretend a heat pump is automatic just because you asked about solar. Mention both if both are on your mind.
Do you promise a grant or a bill saving?
No. Tariffs, export payments and grants change, and savings depend on how you use electricity. We will talk through the system and what it is connected to. We will not invent a payback figure to win the job. Ask us what paperwork we can provide for your install, and we will answer specifically.
We have a shop or a small commercial roof. Is that in scope?
Sometimes. A small commercial roof with sensible access and a board we can connect to is in scope. A huge industrial roof, or a site with a supply we do not work on, may not be. Send photos and the address.
How do we start?
WhatsApp or call 07869 600553. The useful photos are the roof slopes, anything shading them, and the consumer unit. If the house is mid-renovation, say so. Scaffold and roof access need planning around other trades.
