Tripping circuits and dead sockets

Electrical fault finding in Preston

A fault finding visit is for the circuit that trips, flickers, or dies in one room, when you want the cause found rather than a breaker swapped and a hope. We aim to look the same day when the diary and the address allow it. Call 07869 600553.

Find the fault, then repair it

Electrical fault finding is a diagnostic visit. You have a symptom. We find which circuit, which accessory, or which appliance is causing it, and we repair it if that repair is sensible on the day. Swapping parts until the symptom hides is how the same trip comes back next week.

  • A breaker or RCD that trips, immediately or only under load
  • Sockets dead in the kitchen, the lounge, or one bedroom
  • Lights that flicker, or a circuit that only fails when it rains
  • A warm plug, a scorched faceplate, or a buzzing switch
  • An outside light, a pond pump or a garage supply taking the house with it
  • A board that is impossible to live with because one fault kills half the rooms

If the supply is off now, or anything smells of burning, go to the emergency electrician page and call. Do not wait for a convenient diary slot.

What we do on the visit

We start at the board. Which device has tripped, what it is supposed to feed, and whether the labels mean anything. Then we split the circuit: appliances unplugged, accessories opened where we have to, tests run so we are not guessing from the colour of a cable.

A kettle, a heater or a damaged lead is a happy result, because the wiring is innocent and you leave with the circuit back on. A loose connection at a socket is a small repair. Water in an outside fitting is a small repair once it is dried and resealed, or replaced.

A nail through a cable, a ring that was broken during a kitchen fit, or a lighting circuit with a borrowed neutral takes longer. We will tell you when the visit has stopped being a simple repair and started being a quoted job. Linked work, when the board itself is the limitation, is on the consumer unit page.

Faults that show up in local housing

In older Preston terraces the lighting is where odd behaviour hides. Two-way switches that were added later, neutrals borrowed between floors, and roses that have been painted over until the terminals are crumbly. The symptom is often "the landing light does something strange to the bedroom". That is a known pattern. It is still checked, not assumed.

Kitchen rings in extended 1930s semis are another. The circuit was added to when the wall came down, the socket count doubled, and eventually the breaker started to complain. Newer PR4 houses are more likely to trip on a single RCD covering several circuits, so a wet garden light or a faulty dishwasher takes the fridge as well. The fix might be the appliance, the outside light, or splitting the board so one fault cannot take half the house.

When the fault is really a bigger job

Sometimes the tests say the installation is at the end of its life. Rubber cable, a board that cannot be made sense of, several circuits with poor readings. We stop and say so. The next conversation might be an EICR if you need it on paper for a landlord or a sale, or a rewire of the circuits that have failed. We do not start that work on the back of a call-out without agreeing it.

You are left knowing three things: what is back on, what is still isolated, and why. If a circuit has to stay off overnight, you will know which rooms that affects before we leave the drive.

Same-day, said honestly

The page title says same-day diagnostics because that is what people need when a circuit dies before work or before tea. Ring early and, when we are already around Preston, Warton or the nearby towns, we often get there that day. If the diary is full we will say when the next real slot is, or we will treat it as an emergency if what you describe cannot wait.

Have the address ready, and if you rent, the landlord's name. A photo of the open consumer unit, sent on WhatsApp, means we arrive with a better idea of the board. The rest of the electrical work is listed from the electrician in Preston page.

FAQs

Fault finding questions

What sorts of faults do you trace?
RCDs and breakers that trip, sockets dead in one room, lights that flicker, outside lights that take the circuit with them when it rains, warm accessories, and faults that only happen when two things are on together. If the whole street is off, that is the network, not a fault inside your house.
Can you come the same day?
Often, yes, if you ring in the morning and we are already on the patch. It is not a promise that someone is free at 4pm on a busy Friday. Ring 07869 600553 and we will tell you the real slot. If it is dangerous, say so. That jumps the queue ahead of a socket that has been intermittent for a month.
Why not just replace the breaker?
Because the breaker is often doing its job. Replacing it without finding the fault puts the problem back on the wall, sometimes hotter than before. We test the circuit, separate appliances from the wiring, and then repair the actual cause if it is accessible.
It only happens sometimes. Is that still worth a visit?
Yes, but tell us the pattern. For example, when the shower and the oven are on, when it rains, or only after a particular light is used. Intermittent faults take longer, and the pattern is the best clue you can give us before we arrive.
Will you repair it on the same visit?
If the cause is an accessory, a connection, an appliance, or a short length of damaged cable we can reach, usually yes. If the cable is buried in a wall, the board is unsafe, or the wiring is generally at the end of its life, we isolate what is dangerous and quote the next step. You will not get a surprise rewire started without a conversation.
Do older houses have different faults?
They do. Terraces and 1930s houses around Preston sometimes still have borrowed neutrals on the lighting, rings that were extended until they were no longer rings, and boards that trip half the house because one RCD covers too much. Newer houses trip too, usually on a damaged appliance, a wet outside light, or a circuit that was added badly.
Can a fault visit turn into an EICR?
It can, if you want the whole installation written up rather than one circuit repaired. Say that when you book so we allow enough time. Otherwise we stick to the fault you called about. Landlord reports have their own page.
The lights went out and I can smell burning. Should I wait for a booking?
No. Switch off at the main switch if you can do it safely, and call us as an emergency. Fault finding bookings are for problems that can wait a few hours. Burning smells cannot.
