Home charge points

EV charger installation in Preston

A home EV charger is a dedicated circuit and a proper look at the board, not a socket on an extension lead. We install charge points for houses around Preston that have somewhere off the street to park. Call 07869 600553 with a photo of the consumer unit and of where the car sits.

A charger starts with the board

The charge point on the wall is the visible part. The real job is a dedicated circuit, the right protection, and a consumer unit that can actually supply it. Older boards around Preston, especially rewireable fuses and early consumer units with no spare capacity, are the usual reason a charger quote turns into a board upgrade first.

We would rather tell you that on the first look than fit something that trips the house every evening, or that we are not prepared to connect. Send a photo of the board and of the drive to 07869 600553.

This page is about home charge points. It is part of the wider electrician in Preston work, not a separate company.

What we need to know

Where the car parks, and whether that space is yours. Where the consumer unit is. How far the cable has to travel, indoors or out. Whether the driveway, a garage, or a side passage is the sensible place for the unit. Which car you drive, if you already know the socket on it.

A phone photo of the board with the cover open, taken safely, and a photo from the board towards the parking space, is usually enough for us to say "yes, that looks straightforward" or "the board needs doing before we talk about the charger".

What the install includes

The charge point fixed where you can actually use it. A circuit back to the board, protected properly, not borrowed off the downstairs sockets. Cable run in a way that does not become a trip hazard or an eyesore across the front of the house. Labelling on the board so the next person knows what that breaker is.

Before we leave we show you how the unit works. If the board was changed on the same visit, we walk you through that too. If something about the supply means the charger has to be limited, we explain the limit in normal language rather than leaving you to discover it on a cold morning.

Houses we see locally

Newer drives around Warton, Fulwood, Penwortham and the estates are often simple: a modern board, a short cable run, a place to mount the unit off the path. Older terraces in Preston are often the opposite. The board is under the stairs, the only parking is on the street, and there is no private frontage to mount anything on. We will not invent a home install for a car that does not have a home parking space.

1930s semis with a drive at the side are a common middle case. The board can usually be upgraded, and the cable route needs thinking about so it does not cross the garden gate at head height. That is a survey conversation, not a guess from a postcode.

Chargers, solar and the rest of the house

If you are adding solar PV as well, tell us at the same time. The board only wants opening once. If the house electrics are already tripping, or you know the wiring is old, sort that before you add a long overnight load. Faults and rewires have their own pages. A charger on top of a poor installation is how people end up disappointed.

Ask us on the first call if you have been promised a particular grant or a particular charger brand by a car dealer. We will tell you what we can supply and install, and what we cannot.

FAQs

EV charger questions

Can you fit a charger on any house?
No. We fit chargers where you have off-street parking and a sensible cable route back to the board. A car that only parks on a public street, with no private drive or designated bay, is usually a matter for the council, not a home install. Tell us how you park and we will be straight about it.
What if the consumer unit is old or full?
Then the charger waits until the board is sorted. An older fuse box, a board with no spare ways, or earthing that is not suitable, will not safely take a charge point. We say that at the survey, and we can quote the board change and the charger together. See our consumer unit page for what a board change involves.
Do you do a survey first?
Yes. We need to see the board, the supply, where the cable can run, and where the car actually parks. Photos are enough for a first conversation. The final position of the unit is agreed on site so you are not left with a charger you cannot reach, or a cable across a path.
Will it trip the house when we cook and charge?
It should not, if the circuit and the charger are specified for the supply you have. That is part of the survey. If the house already drops out when the shower and the kettle run together, we deal with that limitation rather than adding another heavy load and hoping.
Can the charger go in a garage?
Often yes, if that is where you park and the cable route is reasonable. A detached garage needs its own look at how it is fed. If the garage supply is a weak spur added years ago, we may need to renew that feed as part of the job.
Do you cover the grant paperwork?
Grant schemes change, and not every installer can claim every scheme. Ask us what we can do for your address on the day you enquire. We will not promise a grant we cannot process. The install itself is a straightforward conversation either way.
We have solar panels. Does that change the charger?
It can. Some people want the charger tied in with solar they already have, or solar they are adding. Tell us if there is an array, or if you are thinking about one. Solar work is on our solar PV page. We look at the board once, for both, where that makes sense.
How long does the install take?
A straightforward charger, on a board that is ready for it, is usually a day's work. If the board has to be changed, or the cable route is long, it takes longer and we will say so before we book the day. You get the unit on the wall, the circuit labelled, and a quick run-through of how it works.
