Emergency electrician in Preston

Power off, a breaker that will not stay on, or a smell of burning? Complete Electrical & Plumbing Services covers Preston and the surrounding towns from Warton, day and night. Call or WhatsApp 07869 600553 and we will tell you if we can get there.

When to ring an emergency electrician

An emergency is something unsafe, or something that has taken the power off a home or a business that needs it. It is not every small job that would be more convenient tonight. If you are unsure, ring anyway. We would rather tell you it can wait until morning than have you leave a burning smell until Monday.

  • The whole house or the whole unit has lost power, and the neighbours still have theirs
  • A breaker or RCD trips again as soon as you reset it
  • You can smell hot plastic or burning, or a socket is warm or discoloured
  • Water is reaching a light, a socket, or the consumer unit
  • Sparks came from an accessory, or a fitting has cracked or scorched
  • A shop, office or workshop cannot open because a circuit is dead

If the street is dark and the neighbours are off as well, that is the network, not your board. Check with the distributor or a neighbour before you pay for a call-out. If only your property is off, call us.

What to do before we arrive

Switch off the circuit that is in trouble if you know which one it is. If you do not, and something is hot, wet or smelling of burning, use the main switch on the consumer unit, provided you can do that without standing in water or touching a damaged fitting.

Unplug portable heaters, kettles and extension leads on the affected side of the house. A faulty appliance is a common reason a kitchen ring will not stay on. Leave the suspect item unplugged so we can test the circuit without it.

If you rent, tell the landlord or agent as well, but do not wait for them if there is a burning smell or water on the electrics. Send us the address, your name, and a photo of the board if you can get one safely. WhatsApp is on the same number, 07869 600553.

What we do on the call-out

The first ten minutes are about making it safe. We confirm what is dead, what is still live, and whether the problem is one circuit, the whole board, or something the network has done on the supply side.

From there we look for the cause. A loose termination, a cooked socket, water in an outside light, a nail through a cable, a failed RCD. If we can repair it on the visit, we do. If the repair needs a new board, a length of cable in a wall, or parts we do not carry, we isolate the danger, label what is off, and book the proper job. More on that kind of follow-up is on the fault finding and consumer unit pages.

You get a plain explanation before we leave. What failed, what is safe to use, and what is still off. We do not disappear with "it should be alright now" if a circuit is still isolated.

Preston houses at night

Older terraces in Preston often lose a whole floor of lights from one circuit, because that is how they were wired. A 1930s semi might trip on the sockets once the kitchen was extended and the ring was added to. Newer houses around Warton and the PR4 estates more often trip on a single RCD that covers half the board, so the fridge and the lights go together.

Rented houses add another version of the same night call. The tenant is in the dark, the board has no labels, and nobody knows when it was last looked at. We will make it safe first. If the board or the cables are the real problem, we will say so, and an inspection can be booked for the landlord rather than guessed at from the doorstep.

If the emergency is also a leak

Water and electrics together are common, and they are a bad combination to split across two companies at 11pm. A burst on a bathroom, a cylinder letting go, or rain coming in around an outside light needs the circuit made safe and the water stopped.

Because plumbing and electrics sit with the same team, you are not ringing a second firm to wait behind the first. Tell us both halves of the problem when you call. If it turns into a heating fault as well, that can be picked up on the same number. Start with the electrician in Preston page if you want the wider picture of the electrical work, or ring straight through if the power is off now.

FAQs

Emergency electrician questions

What counts as an electrical emergency?
No power to the property, a burning smell, scorch marks, sparks, water running onto electrics, or a breaker or RCD that trips straight away every time you reset it. A socket that has been dead for a week, or a light you would like moved, can usually wait for a booked visit.
Are you actually on call overnight?
Yes. Phone and WhatsApp are answered 24 hours a day, including weekends and bank holidays. If we are already out on another emergency we will tell you where we are up to, and whether you need to isolate something while you wait.
Should I keep resetting a breaker that trips?
No. One reset is reasonable. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and call. Resetting it over and over can turn a loose connection into damaged cable. The exception is if you have unplugged a faulty kettle or heater and want to see whether the circuit holds. If it does not hold, stop.
What if I can smell burning?
If you can reach the main switch on the consumer unit safely, turn it off. Do not pull a fitting off the wall to investigate. If you can see smoke, or you cannot isolate the supply, leave the property and call the fire service as well as us. Tell us the address and that the supply is off, or that you could not get to it.
Water is dripping onto a light or a socket. What should I do?
Do not touch the wet fitting. Isolate the circuit if you know which breaker it is, or switch off at the main switch if you do not. Stop using the room. A leak onto electrics is both a plumbing job and an electrical job, which is why having both trades on one number is useful. Tell us where the water is coming from if you know.
How fast can you get to Preston?
It depends where we are and where you are. Warton to central Preston, Penwortham, Fulwood or Kirkham is a normal run. We will give you an honest arrival window when you call. If we cannot make it in a useful time, we will say so.
What happens when you arrive?
We make the installation safe first. Then we find the circuit, and we repair it if the fault is accessible and the parts are to hand. If the cable is buried, the board is unsafe, or the repair needs parts, we leave the danger isolated and book the follow-up. You will know which of those it is before we leave.
Do you cover shops that cannot open?
Yes. A unit with no power, no lights, or a tripping board at opening time is an emergency. Tell us the trading hours and the address. Light commercial call-outs are on the same 24/7 number. Larger industrial sites are a different question. Describe the supply and we will tell you if it is a job for us.
